So far I think MIKE radio is great! I love that I can hear old and new music, rock and dance music. It's the happy medium of adult radio stations that I've been waiting for, without all the blabbing!!!!!
I really miss Star 93.7 fm AND the morning show. I think there is TOO much variety in music with the new station. I've started listening to 106.3 instead.
The music is good but I miss the morning show with Ralph Karen and fast Freddy I looked forward to all they different themes they had. I use to laugh all the way to work and in work. We now changed to 107.8 in the morning and go back to you later in the afternoon. Your music is good but I need that comedy in the morning to get my day going.
Absolutely the worse radio ever...idiotic trend on the way, this is what happens when who just don't get it...take over the airwaves.
stupidradio
man... i love mike fm! it's so much better than star. I love not having to hear the annoying djs so often and i can listen to it as streaming feed on my computer. I don't like talk at all and i love mike fm cause it's pretty much non-stop music. I do wish they would play less 80's and 90's music and some more music from now. But not that pop crap.
they need to fix their site a bit too...
Mike FM stinks, I miss the morning show, they made me laugh on the way to work. Bring back the DJ's
MIKE ROCKS!!!!! Such a great mix of music. Though, a little less Whitesnake would be nice, but otherwise, great music!!! It's about time Boston. Oh and Ralphie Marino was SO annoying!
I can't stand the "Mike" 93.7 format. I miss Karen, Freddy, and Ralphie. Matt Siegal on kiss108 is boring as are most other dj's on other stations. The dj's on 94.5 in the morning are annoying and rude. I have been buying more cds and rarely listen to the radio anymore now that I don't have star 93.7.
where in the world are the djs
im sure glad i listen to WAAF
The Mike format is not that good . There are many other stations to listen to to hear the type of music this format has gone to. If I wanted to listen to all that other stuff I could have tuned into any of the other stations on the air. You have taken 93.7 what was once a great station and turned it into complete crap!
Having worked in Boston radio for many years, I can say that Mike-FM's format is long overdue. I like the variety and I hear a lot of 80's music which I personally miss. However, with no DJ's it gives the station a bit of cold, canned and impersonal feel and I find myself switching over to 92.9 just to hear some life. It's reminiscent of automated radio that a) was in experimental stages back in the early 70's and b) didn't work. Mike-FM is a good idea, but not sure yet if it will work in Boston. They really need to add the DJ's, maybe even go back to a Hitradio feel where the DJ's just announced or back announced, did a quick little adlib while announcing time, weather, top of the hour ID, etc.
Boston radio has truly sucked for the past 5 years. There's been no really good Adult AC station that didn't place newer music in heavier rotation. Magic is stil playing the safe, wussie type songs, Star 97 played annoying, mindless crap with the exception of the few good disco songs they threw in every so often. It's not their fault entirely, today's music is less real talent and more of a manufacturing business, and WZLX's format caters heavily to the male demographic. I get pretty tired of hearing Creedence, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Who for example. I could go on, but this post would be longer than it already is. However, seeing that this format is becoming a trend, I'm looking forward to a good battle of the airwaves again.
Damn, I miss working in radio sometimes!
Instead complaining, you got 104.1 HOWARD STERN!!!.
I like the format of MIKE FM. I want music not not a lot of talk. Good variety. I listen all the time.
MikeFM - we've tried listening a few times at work and each time have to turn it off after about half an hour.
It sounds like a Supermarket/Walgreen's muzak tape from which someone has surgically removed all bass levels and replaced them with treble.
For now we'll suffer on through with 'ZLX's incredible mix of the same 25 songs every day (can't listen to Stern or 'BCN type music at work, sadly.)
mike fm is the worst thing i EVER HEARD... sometimes, especially in the morning, you like to hear the djs, with mike you don't get any news, weather, traffic.. NOTHING... WORST MOVE EVER MIKE FM!!!! =(
Ralphie, Karen and Freddie, were so much fun. The music was also so fun. I could turn on 93.7 in the morning and know I was going to drive to work laughing and singing!!I will give you a shot "MIKE," but you can't replace the people and the vibe of 93.7 of old.
Star was ta format thhat would have made it in Boston, what a shame to loose the music and the djs.. Mike is awful anyone who likes it has been paid to write these response by entercom or record those fake ads on mike..
The whatever weekends on Mix 98.5 are good and contain a lot of star music... Watchout Mike will never see the light will Entercom say they were wrong????
I have become a radio station flipper since MIKE has happened. We need our upbeat STAR music back
The TEST phase for MikeFM should be near completion, I hope. This is a good example of technology gone bad. There is way too much automation in everything now. We, the people of Boston metro and the surrounds need real live people in the morning.....like Ralphie, Karen, Fast Freddie, and Ms. Foxx....We need traffic reports and we need news, and we need real live talk radio back. MikeFM stinks!
I feel like a robot listening to Mike FM - where are the DJs? Where are the news and traffic reports? It's awful. Whoever said we wanted a homogenized mix of incongruous music pumped out with a few commercials thrown in for fun? It's awful. Please bring back Karen, Freddy, and Ralphie and the morning show! I used to listen every single morning and I laughed all the way to work. Very poor programming change! I've taken this station off my presets.
While I enjoy hearing more 80's music, the lack of DJ's is awful. There needs to be a little live action with news, weather, etc .. I feel like Mike could be broadcasting from anywhere in the country and they just try to pretend they know about Boston with those fake announcements in between songs .. it is not personal at all. And I miss the morning show people!!
I miss the morning show! It's hard to get my bearings without the Star Report! I loved having a great mix of personalities to get me through my morning and Lady D getting me home! Traffic reports aren't the same without Frankie. If I wanted impersonal mix of music I would listen to my iPod.
I am so pissed that they did away with the Morning show!!! I miss Karen, Ralphie, Fast Freddy and Frankie Foxx!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why couldent they have kept the morning show, and made the afternoon's/nights all music.
a radio station with no on-air personalities has no personality. I miss the morning show.
Honestly, if I wanted to have every musical genre since the 80's playing on my stereo, I'd just pop in some CDs.
A radio station that plays everything is just one big "ADHD moment".
Star 93.7 was the best! Especially in the morning. My two school children miss it too! Bring back the DJ's. The new format stinks.
I heard MIKE for the first time this afternoon for about a 1/2 hour and have to say I like it. The variety of the songs was something I am not used to hearing on regular radio. I am a XM owner (for three years now) and never listen to regular radio anymore except for traffic and sports, however, after hearing MIKE, I may find myself tuning in now and then.
This is obviously a step by Entercom and other companies who are changing formats (like the JACK format) in order to try to match the magic of sat. radio.
I miss star Ralphie, Karen and Freddie terribly. I use to laugh in the morning and now all I do is switch from one station to another. I thought the best policy was give the listeners what they want to make them happy. Well it's obvious from the huge response from people that they want the old format back. So if the company had half a brain they would bring back Ralphie, Karen and Freddie and the old format. I refuse to listen to MIKE radio and I hope the company sees they made a mistake and beg the DJ's to come back with an apology and a huge raise. The people who prefer the new format had to be paid or coaxed to write their comments.
As many of you are saying, Mike FM sucks! What happened to the feel good music that you can dance to in your car? Now all we get is classic rock and an occasional "feel-good song!" Bring back star!
I have to agree with the others who miss Ralphie, Freddie and Karen. I do listen, but in the morning you really need to have some fun, and those guys were great. The rest of the day is okay, but bring back a good morning show. i heard Karen this morning, but I miss the Star report, too.
I never knew how much I missed Karen, Freddie, and Ralph's humor and reality talk show, until one morning on the way to work I was no longer listening to the radio at all! I refused to believe that the three people that I felt made the show were gone and kept thinking I must have landed on another planet and just couldn't pick up the reception. Then I heard Freddie's voice on a car commercial! How pathetic! Listening to the station only for a couple of morning commutes was more than I could take of commercials and boring music. Only yesterday, while commuting home and desperately trying to find a station worth listening to, my channel scanner came back to 93.7, stopping just in time to hear Karen's voice. I feel like the life of the show has been demoted. It is unfortunate that this station sounds like all the rest in this area. I predict that 93.7 has lost thousands of listeners and will continue to do so.I guess I may have to move back to the southwest to find diversity and variety in music.
Music is lousy....the new format is BORING and the FUN shared among the DJ's was enjoyable and uplifting. This MIKE is a joke, and lacks talent. Want to do something SMART? Go back to the ole routine and get your veiwers back. NEVER, NEVER has there been such an out cry for the old station back..... LISTEN TO YOUR VIEWERS......or lose them.
My God - you people actually like DJ's? No thank you! I think it's great to be able to listed to music without all the talk and crap that other stations play. LOVE IT!
i miss ralphie, karen and fast freddy. did you fire them. please let me kown if they are on another radio station. please let me know. i want to listen to the station. please i mss ralphie, karen and fast freddy. bring them back, so i can continue listening to the station. thank you.
Why did you mess with a good thing. Star 93.7 was a station that really served the interests of the the boomers and club folks today. I still don't understand why you cancelled a highly successful show for the computerized dj that you have on Mike?
Well, I just discovered Star 93.7 FM streaming on the internet. I bookmarked the site and now set both my work and home computers to the station. It has Fast Freddy and Karen Blake. Google search "star 93.7 Boston" and the link will appear.
Mike...what a waste!
I was a faithful STAR 93.7 listener and it took me awhile to get used to the new format when MIKE took over. I have to say that I really like the new format. I used to hear the same songs over & over at least 14 times in one hour. That doesn't happen on MIKE. I can go all day without hearing the same song twice. I really like the variety with the new format. What I don't like is the cold and impersonal feeling without the DJ's. Ralphie, Karen, Freddie and Frankie Foxx were great to wake up with and drive into work with. I miss the camaraderie and the fun they shared on-air. I miss the weather reports, the traffic reports - now face it...we need traffic reports in Boston! I won't listen to the other morning shows - not my style at all, and like a previous poster stated, sometimes their morning shows are downright rude. I can do without that. I'll stick with MIKE for now, but I'll be listening to my CD collection more often and I'll be channel surfing...I have to have my weather & traffic reports.
I love Mike!! I always have it on! Even my children like it and I find them singing along to some of the songs! I go between Mike and the Pike! I'm glad Star 93.7 is gone!! That station was horrible!
what crapp... play anything my ass.its just more radio with no excitment or personality. i always believed that djs at least bring some sort of interest and showmanship to the airwaves... but mike fm is just dribble and drewel go away and bring back the morning crew....
Mike FM is a screw up. They took the best radio station personalities away and dumped in a canned digital rotation that actually is worse than any play list that someone could come up with. I have bought an XM Radio and listen to it instead. If you all miss the Star 93.7 music format you can get it streaming online at http://www.star937fm.com/star937fm/
Mike FM stinks
I really like Mike-FM. I didn't like Star 93.7 very much but scanning through the stations the other day, I tripped over Mike. I've been listening now for almost a week. I'm a stay-at-home mom and I appreciate not having to actually listen to people yapping. Music, all the time. Whodathunk? And I don't have to create the playlist in Windows? Thank-you, Mike, for playing most of the songs in MY music library.
Listen up, MIKE execs, you have insulted us by thinking you can capture our listening loyalty by playing EVERY genre of music! The same people who may like music such as Led Zepplin or Boston, do not care to listen to, say, Michael Jackson or Beyonce, and visa versa. You have lost me as a listener. If I wanted a mix I would play my own cd mixes. The Starr morning show team was THE best -- hip, fun, and entertaining. Reliable yet unpredictable. I even miss the star report and Frankie Foxx's traffic report. Please consider bringing the morning team back, and get back the cool groove that WAS Starr 93.7.
I LOVE MIKE! No more "talk about nothing" DJ's. Great variety of music. Mix 98.5 plays the same 10 songs over and over and over again. Mike plays everything. Many of these songs I have on my IPod. I love rock n roll and they do play that but i like to hear some slower stuff and some music that brings back memories from growing up. Mike does this and truly offers Boston a better mix without any silly chit chat.
Any chance of bringin back the club classics on the weekend nights? If not, 103.3 with Barry Scott is what we're listening to.
I have friends and coworkers who loved STAR 93.7 and they are all frustrated and outraged by this station change. Both the DJS and the music were a great mix and definitely brought variety. I don't understand why it was ever changed, especially since they were doing so well.STAR should never have been replaced. The music on MIKE FM is horriffic with many songs that belong on OlDIES 103! Bring back STAR!!!
Mike fm sucks!
Bring back Star!
93.7 mike fm is still owned and operated by the same company that owned and operated Star 93.7
This will pretty much sum up what the greedy corporate fools that ran Star 93.7 did:
They saw Star as having a decent, yet small listening base. To them, it didn't matter that there were a lot of us that liked the "dance friendly" oriented format or not. They see it in dollar signs.
They're also scared to death about satellite radio moving in. This is why prior to the format change, you were hearing all those commercials about "you heard it here first".
You may be saying to yourself, how could they have been hurting money wise if they had plently of commercials being aired and just about everyone you know listening to the station?
Well, that's not how corporate sees it. They look at the arbitron ratings.
Putting that aside, let's talk about us - the listeners. We're all pissed off that our "little community" of disco/dance music lovers has once again been pushed aside. This same thing happened when Kiss 108 sold-out back in the mid 80s when they decided to start playing all that modern rock/alternative crap mixed in with whatever dance music they played.
We all bitched and moaned about that also... but it never got us anywhere.
Now, we have nothing (expect for satellite radio and streaming 103.5 ktu out of nyc).
I see 93.7 mike fm trying to stress the point that they "play everything". Who gives a crap about hearing everything? We already have over a dozen rock stations on the fm dial already paying classic rock, modern rock, pop rock and oldies. What makes 93.7 mike fm unique? Nothing.
Yes, gone are the radio jocks we loved to hear (except for that annoying bitch Ann Duran - now that was a smart move getting rid of her. Someone actually called in one day to request Diamond Girl and she said "Were I come from, upstate Michigan, we never heard that song". Ah, this isn't upstate Michigan, this is Boston, you fool).
What about the mix shows (Star Sound Factory) on the weekends late at night? DJ Ricky, Massi, Danae Jacovidis & DJ Spinelli entertaining us after the clubs got out - all gone.
What about the noontime workout or the early evening mix shows? What about the Sunday night club classics? What about the new/breaking dance music coming out?
Hence, 93.7 mike fm says "give us a try". Give you a try? What the FUCK could you possibly offer with this current format that could keep us former listeners happy with? Nothing.
Friends, let's face it - disco/dance music apparently is not welcomed in Boston. There is no place for this music here. If there were enough demand for it, there would be a major station playing it. It belongs in NYC and other places.
There is however, a huge demand for rock n roll. What we need is MORE rock stations to be added to the dozen or more we already have! Why not? The demand is here for it!! In fact, what we should do is change every station on the fm dial to some form of rock music. We could even go out and spray paint "dance & disco sucks" and "rock n roll rules" to hype it up even more!
Maybe if we push for the opposite, one day, just maybe one day, something might change in "anti-dance/disco" Boston and we'll soon be able to enjoy fm radio as we once did.
Mike FM SUX! It has no on-air personality. Talk radio rules!
I like Mike! I've never been a fan of morning "shows". Too much talk, and usually a bunch of yack-yack, lame-o, crap. If you want funny, listen to ZLX. Sweeney is funny usually, if you can get past his ego and love of his own voice. But Lance Norris has some real quick, biting, wit.
Right now, I'm in a music mood and Mike has a decent mix (if I skip my mind over the dance stuff), and no talk!
The Mill, WMLL, 106.5 in Manchester, is pretty good classic rock without the yack, but their 100 Watt light bulb they use for an antenna doesn't even make it into southern NH, where I drive.
i listern to ktu out nyc play same music stay played in boston new york is the best station you guys had great station they mikefm in trash bring back dance music for boston
Are you guys basically just another spinoff of the new boring generic JAckFM? because I think you are. I just want to know if you agree with me. Other than that you guys are cool or whatever.
I terribly miss the old star 93 format. I miss the morning dj's and dance music to get me going in the morning. I find myself turning off the radio completely instead of listening to songs that I wasn't crazy about when they came out in the 80's, 90's, etc. Please bring back my comfort zone.
YOu people are crazy. I love the fact that there are no dj's expecially in the morning....if you need a voice to listen to go to every other radio station if you just want to relax in an already high stressed situation (damn Boston traffic) then listen to Mike. The only thing I wish is they would play more 80's I miss the 80's music....that 70's crap is so awful and played on like 6 other radio stations...overdone overplayed. We need a radio station that is almost dedicated completely to the 80's, though don't lose throwing in the other stuff. I think that Mike is great it is like having my mp3 player in the car without all the annoying extra wires...and remebering to take it out of the extreme heat..
I love Mike! I work from home and have two small children. When I feel stressed out, Mike keeps me sane and puts a smile on my face everyday. I go from feeling overwhelmed and aggravated to dancing around the kitchen with my kids. Anyone who wants the crappy music from now over and over (and over) should go listen to Kiss.
I wish there was a dance club that played this music-if there is I hope they advertise on Mike so I can find out about it!
My wife and I absolutely love Mike FM, we now have all our friends listening to it at work too. There is no where in our office where you don't hear it. It is simply perfect. I didn't realize how much I missed the sax from the 80s!
Mike FM stinks and so does his stupid sarcastic attitude! I hate hearing that cold rude voice especially first thing in the morning. The music is no fun and the lack of up-beat, real life, easy-to-relate-to dj's like Ralphie, Karen and Freddie caused me to change my preset to 98.5. I gave Mike a chance but I can't get used to the bad selection of music and the sarcastic voice of mike.
IPODS can be plugged into just about anything so obivously if we are listening to the radio it is by choice. So Mike fm should stop trying to guess what's on our IPODS and bring back star 93.7. Also, whoever thought up mike fm slogans should be fired "We play everything" eeew I want to barf everytime I hear that!! Oh and one more thing mike fm reminds me of the music being played in the car when playing grand theft auto: strang, impersonal, twighlight zone, CRAP!!
mike is ok so far---but i would like u to bring back the morning show with the 3 d/j's
I'm kind of annoyed that there are so many Star 93.7 sticklers here and relatively few people who say they like Mike FM. Star had a short playlist, just like just about every other Boston radio station, and a lot of the music was annoying not to mention overplayed. Who needs that?
I can understand the need for at least a morning radio DJ, as I like to hear the gossip, breaking news and occasional interviews to start my day. I think Mike should get a morning program, which will give the station some character. I am however not usually fond of daytime DJ's. They think they are interesting and that people want to hear them, but usually they are boring, annoying or shamelessly advertise something. I ESPECIALLY hate the DJ's who do voice-overs for ads, that to me is a loss of integrity. This is why I can't stand the talk radio format, which is full of DJs who also do the ads. A DJ should be focusing on the damn music or program, and even though I know they try to gear the ads to the sort of audience who likes a music style, I think DJ advertisements and advertising plugs during their chatter overstep the bounds.
It's strange that Mike always announces when their going to ads. That just causes me to change the station. If I were an advertiser, I wouldn't want that.
As for the person who said "the same people who may like music such as Led Zepplin or Boston, do not care to listen to, say, Michael Jackson or Beyonce, and visa versa" - that's B.S. That's EXACTLY what is wrong with most stations - their short playlists because they think we can be pigeonholed by demographic if they play the same stale short playlists over and over. I like Beyonce, Third Eye Blind and the Commodores as well as Lynyrd Skynard. I like to hear a variety of music as long as it's "good" music, and like to be surprised sometimes with music I have not heared before or music I have not heard in a long time. The other day Mike played Jennifer Paige's "Crush," which I have not heard in, oh, over ten years and have no idea why stations never play it anymore. Just an example of the sort of good song you might hear when a station sticks to REAL variety. Mike just needs to get a LITTLE bit of DJ in to get a bit of character, but as far as I'm concerned I'm glad there is a station out there that strives to "play everything." And no I'm not paid to make a positive comment like some of you Star-93.7 sticklers claim...
Alright this is like a big marketing plan! I get it!!! The executive's of 93.7 are going to bring back the dj's after we express are unappreciative views for a while! It seems like a page out of the WWE wrestling. They bring back Hulk Hogan to motivate revenue and 93.7 brings back the DJ'S after a long absence. What the .... are you smoking Mr. radio executive? Time to pull out the "Tony Robbins" book thats gathering dust in your top draw and stop smoking the weed. Bring back 93.7 the way it was! The joke is over.
I think Mike Stinks! I miss Ralphie, Karen, Freddie and Frankie in the morning and Lady D in the afternoon. I feel like I'm at the dentist, after a few minutes of listening I swear I can hear a drill in the background. I have CD's and if I want to listen to just music I listen to them. In the morning and in the afternoon you need the human touch not elevator music. Stop being so cheap, yes we get it a computer can do the job for less. I have an idea why not replace the stupid executive that came up with "Mike" with a computer and give us back the djs!
i think mike sux i miss the old star and all the dj`s i grew up listling to some of them on 94.5. i use to listen all the time and go to all of the great concerts they put on at thr roxy but the station is now awful i don`t even have it programed in my car anymore it was the BEST station in boston . PLEASE BRING BACK STAR 93.7
I LOVE MIKE! I hate the morning shows, talk shows, and obnoxious DJs. If I want News and Weather and Traffic, I know what channels play that, I listen in and go back to MIKE. The only think wrong with MIKE is that they do play commercials. MORE MUSIC, MORE MUSIC, MORE MUSIC!!!!!!!
The reason why MIKE-FM exists is because the DJ's currently on the air on other stations SUCK! The morning show on Star was the worst ever! Karen Blake sounds like she's from Revere -- how do they let anyone with that bad of an accent on the air? Ralphie should go back to New York and drive a cab.
Do you honestly think that a station tries something like MIKE without doing thorough research? Nobody wants to hear the stale, no-talent on-air 'no personalities' that exist today. But, hey, that's radio's fault, too, because the majority doesn't want to experiment or do something different. Why do you think Howard Stern is going to SIRIUS?
The FCC needs to get their act together and repeal the laws that allowed the big corporations to buy up all of these stations, and be able to own 5 in the same market. That's why there is no variety, that's why there is something like MIKE -- because the industry is running out of ideas! No one needs to compete with a station that is the same format as theirs because they would be competing against themselves!
Radio was at it's best in the 50's, 60's and 70's because it was less formulaic. DJ's were allowed to be on-air PERSONALITIES. The 80's were passable, but the 90's and beyond have been terrible.
As others have stated, do yourself a favor and listen to CD's or your Ipod -- turn the radio off! Send a message to the industry! Write your Congressman to get the FCC to make the necessary changes to the ownership rules. Everything will become canned, satellite, or more homogenized than it is now. Local news and traffic will cease to exist, and you'll have to listen to the small AM stations for that stuff (if they haven't all turned Hispanic yet).
I have stop listening to "Mike" 93.7. Not only have they gotten rid of the morning show but the music selection has changed. I want Star back. I know a lot of people who have stopped listening to 93.7 and gone to kiss.
i like most of mike's music, not all. too much variety can be a bad thing. i like music anywhere from the seventies right up to music from today. rock, pop(like REM, not NSync), techno and video game music.(if mike ever plays any video game music, they will be my favorite station of all time). however, i do think that they should have djs.it's like the station is completely automated and doesn't feel alive or personal. so put the djs back(and cut the rap shit,i hate rap) and you've got a fairly decent radio station.
It has been months now that we haven't had Star 93. Karen Blake just popped into my head today and I decided to Google her to see it she found a job on another station so I could tune in. I really enjoyed her and her hilarious star report. I found this site instead. Someone mentioned about streaming star 93 on the internet, I hope that is true...I'll check it out.
HATE IT!!!!! I've also become a radio jumper or use my CD more now that Star Went to MIKE. Ekes don't like it at all give us back the good old STAR days
Where else can you hear actual music in the morning? Talk and nonsense everywhere else. I like not knowing what is coming up next! This is what I have been waiting for. When I turn on the radio, all I want is music, and that is all I get! Music I don't hear anymore anywhere else, too!
I have tried to listen to Mike FM every now and then. The DJs were replaced by that annoying Mike fm ad. It is a cold radio station and the music is really not that good. Don't know what music is going to play. The DJs were fun. I listen to 104.5 now.
Karen and Frankie have re-surfaced on Oldies 103.
Mike is junk. IMHO, the entire
Boston radio market is junk. No Jazz. Mediocre top 40 stations and no club / dance mucic to mention.
Star did it for me. Mike makes me sick to my stomach!!!!!!
Nice work radio station suits. You took the best Boston station and made it a complete joke.
Hey guys,
I know we'll never get Star back you guys should see what they
wrote in the Herald today about Mike 93.7!! It's all lies! They must
have just taken the word of the bosses over at Entercom! I took a
look at the Arbitron ratings, The time spent listening to Mike is
down 31% From Spring of 2005 and 38% from one year ago! Mike is
doing so bad!! This woman printed out right lies!! I wrote an email
expressing my dislike for the article and the lack of research
within it! The editors email address is below and so is the article!
If you could take a minute I think we should all just let them know
just how many listeners Mike has caused them to lose!

Mike strikes a chord with Hub radio listeners
By Heather V. Eng
Wednesday, November 16, 2005 - Updated: 09:59 AM EST
Mike doesn't do a lot of talking. He lets the music speak for him.
During the past seven months, Bostonians have gotten to know
Mike, also known as "We Play Everything" WMKK-FM (93.7). Unlike his
radio peers, Mike doesn't have chatty DJ friends. He eschews talk in
favor of a vast playlist spanning genres and musical eras, where
Elvis, ABBA and Guns N' Roses can all coexist.
"It's very much the concept of taking thousands of songs and
randomly playing them," said WMKK program director Steve Jones.
Mike's DJ-free, random playlist format - known in some cities as
Jack - began in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 2002. After sweeping through
Canadian radio markets, the format arrived in Denver in April 2004.
It's now spread to some 100 other U.S. cities.
So does Boston like Mike?
The answer: a qualified yes. Since its debut in April,
listenership has slowly grown, according to Jones. For summer 2005,
Arbitron ratings ranked Mike at No. 15, tied with urban contemporary
station WBOT-FM (97.7), placing it two spots behind classic rock
station WZLX-FM (100.7), and ahead of adult contemporary WBOS-FM
(92.9) and rocking WAAF-FM (107.3)."Jack" stations have the largest
25-to-44-year-old audience of all formats, according to Paragon
Media Strategies.
As the new kid on the dial, Mike has the advantage of offering
listeners a different, relatively unpredictable format. But without
well-known local on-air personalities Mike has to find new ways to
stay in touch with its Hub audience.
"Our biggest challenge," Jones said, "is to stay local and
relevant to Boston and play music Boston listeners want to hear."
According to Tony Sanders, business editor of Billboard Radio
Monitor, Mike, like its brother station in other markets, pays
careful attention to local listeners' preferences. Mike's top played
artists here are, in order of popularity, Aerosmith, Madonna, U2,
Van Halen, Prince, the Cars, Bob Marley, Hall and Oates, the Police
and the Rolling Stones." `We play what we want' is what they say,
but there's definitely some structure to it and enough room to
tailor it to any market," Sanders said of the Mike/Jack format.
For a generation of music fans plugged into its digital music
players, Mike's random playlist has obvious appeal.
"It's like one guy's iPod attached to a 50,000-watt
transmitter," Jones said.
But Sanders thinks Mike's appeal is broader.
"Sure, we can all grab our record collection and throw five days
worth of music onto our iPods, but we're not going to have every
song off the Aerosmith album we want to hear," Sanders said. "Or
when you go to a party, it's always great when someone else throws
something on and you say, `Man, I haven't heard that in a while -
that was great!' That's what the guys at Mike are doing in Boston."

BRING STAR BACK
I miss the morning show! I have found everyone except for Ralphie, but they are not on stations that I would listen to or (like Freddie) they only have little blips here and there. The other stations' morning shows suck. I hope MIKE goes down in flames.
Awesome station 93.7 Mike-FM!! I'm so tired of all those obnoxious DJS all they do is talk non-stop and play one song cut it short and start talking again. Thank you Mike-FM!!!! I just love the music mix. "I'm a baby boomer" and I just love to hear the songs I haven't heard in a long, long time. MIke-FM is perfect for sunbathing at the beach or the pool. 93.7 Mike-FM is "AWESOME", Thank you!!!!!!
93.7 Mike-FM is a "Fabulous" radio station! Thank you for the wonderful variety in music!

Anna
Hi, your music play list on 93.7 Mike-FM brings back a lot of good memories from the past!!!
93.7 Mike-FM, "YOU ROCK"!!!!!!!
Mike FM, Charlie FM, Bob FM, Doug FM, ect. are the death of FM radio and all the fun personalities. i hate them all.
MIKE is fantastic - I miss the old Star 93.7 music, but I don't miss those DJs at all. Ralphie Marino was crass, obnoxious, and tacky (without the humor) - I'm sure a lot of people go for that, but I'm not one of them.
ok you all need to get over that star is gone....ya it was a good station but there are others out there.....all stations change eventually
